Malama Maunalua Website Redesign
Overview
Malama Maunalua is a nonprofit focused on restoring and conserving Maunalua Bay in Hawai’i. Their website contained a large number of dense, text-heavy pages that did not translate well to mobile. Users struggled to find essential information, the mobile experience was inconsistent, and visual hierarchy was unclear across the site. My goal was to reorganize and redesign content-heavy pages so they were easier to digest on mobile while improving usability and overall visual consistency.
Role
UX and UI Designer | Website Audit, Responsive Design, Content Restructuring
Challenge
The original website experience required excessive scrolling, especially on mobile. Content lacked hierarchy, important information was buried, and navigation subpages did not clearly guide users. Pages built for desktop did not adapt well to smaller screens, which made it difficult for people to understand the organization’s mission, find events, or learn how to get involved. The overall experience felt overwhelming and visually fragmented.
Process
- Full Website Audit
- Combining Insights with Organizational Priorities
- Restructuring text-heavy pages with a mobile-first approach
- Refreshing the event calendar for clarity
- Adding calls to action that made it easier to volunteer or learn more
- Unifying imagery and graphic styles to create a cohesive visual language
- Prioritization
- Condensing redundant information across subpages
- Reducing excessive scrolling on mobile
- Transforming long content blocks into scannable sections
- Addressing visual and interaction inconsistencies throughout the site
I reviewed every page on desktop and mobile, documenting issues related to layout, hierarchy, spacing, readability, and interaction patterns. I also noted visual inconsistencies, unclear pathways, and areas where content could be better grouped.
I aligned insights from the audit with the needs of the Education and Outreach Coordinator. Together we identified the most urgent opportunities to improve the user experience. This included:
With many areas needing attention, I ranked tasks based on user impact. The top priorities became:
Opportunities + Solutions
- Improved Mobile Layouts
I reorganized content into clear sections with structured headings, better spacing, and consistent patterns. This reduced cognitive load and helped users scan quickly.
- Cohesive Visual Language
I applied a more unified style for imagery, graphics, and spacing to better reflect Malama Maunalua’s brand and create continuity across pages.
- Clear and Engaging CTAs
I added strategic calls to action in areas where users most needed direction, helping guide them toward volunteering, attending events, or exploring programs.
The Impact
The updated site presents information in a clearer, more digestible way, especially on mobile. Users can explore the organization’s mission, browse upcoming events, and take action with far less friction. By improving consistency and reducing overwhelming content, the redesign helped increase clarity and engagement for a community-driven nonprofit that relies on volunteers and accessible information.
