Overview
Malama Maunalua is a nonprofit dedicated to restoring and conserving Maunalua Bay in Hawai’i. Their website had a large number of pages, making it difficult for users on mobile devices to quickly find information. My goal was to make content-heavy pages easier to digest on mobile, while improving overall usability and visual consistency.
Role
UX/UI Designer | Website Audit, Responsive Design
Challenge
Pages didn’t always translate smoothly from desktop to mobile. Important information was lost with the endless scrolling. Content became overwhelming on smaller screens, the home page lacked hierarchy, and the navigation subpages weren’t clear. As a result, users had to scroll excessively to engage with any content.
Process
- Full Website Audit
- Combining Insights with Organizational needs
- Restructuring content-heavy pages for mobile first
- Refreshing the event calendar for clarity
- Adding CTAs to clearly drive engagement
- Unifying imagery and graphic styles across the site
- Prioritization
- Condense redundancy within subpages
- Reduce excessive scrolling on mobile
- Transform content-heavy pages and graphics for mobile
- Reduce any inconsistencies and usability issues
I reviewed every page on both desktop and mobile, noting design inconsistencies and interaction issues.
I merged my audit findings with the organization’s requests, focusing on:
With a growing to-do list, I worked with the Education and Outreach Coordinator to address the organization’s highest-impact issues, while keeping a mobile-first mindset. The items to be addressed:
Opportunities + Solutions
- Improved Mobile Layouts: Organized dense text into scannable sections with headings and consistent spacing.
- Consistent Visual Language: Used cohesive imagery to reinforce the organization’s brand.
- Addition of Engaging CTAs: Strategically placed buttons to encourage action from users.
The Impact
Malama Maunalua’s refreshed site now tells their story clearly. Users can explore information, find upcoming events, and volunteer quickly. The work done allowed the information to be more accessible and digestible, increasing user engagement and action for the organization.
